My favorite hobby is reading, and my Kindle is one of my most used devices. Because it’s ultra-lightweight, easy to use, and small enough to slip into my purse or backpack, I’ve found I read even more because I can bring my Kindle with me when I run errands, go to appointments, and travel. The only downside to Kindles is they rarely go on sale, but Amazon launched its early Black Friday deals—and four of the most popular models are quietly up to 27 percent off.
The fun part of purchasing a Kindle is deciding which model will work best for you. During the sale, you can choose from the standard Kindle (my pick), Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, or Amazon Kindle Kids. Below, you’ll find all of the details about each one to help you to make the best choice. Just make sure to act quickly because these deals will disappear as quickly as they popped up.
Amazon Kindle
I’ve had a standard Amazon Kindle for almost a decade, and I’m finally ready to upgrade to the 2024 version with a 6-inch screen while it’s on sale. With 16 gigabytes of storage, Amazon says this Kindle holds “thousands” of books, which is more than enough storage for me. I’m also excited to enjoy a backlight with brightness I can adjust—a huge upgrade from my older model that doesn’t offer any lighting at all. The updated battery is also thrilling because this Kindle offers up to six weeks of battery life on a single charge. Score the classic black model for $85 or opt for the fun green matcha shade for $5 more.
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
The Kindle Paperwhite is very tempting while it’s marked down to $130. This version from Amazon’s e-reader line offers a 7-inch display, which is 1 inch larger than the standard Kindle mentioned above. Although a larger screen is exciting, the highlight of this model is that it’s waterproof, so you can float in a pool or wade in the ocean without worrying about drowning your device (this might be the reason why I’m shopping for a new Kindle…). You can also pick up a Paperwhite in black or two fun colors: jade and raspberry.
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition
If you need as much space as possible on your Kindle, the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition is the one you’ll want to shop during Amazon’s early Black Friday sale. It has 32 gigabytes of storage, which is double of what the standard Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite offer. Plus, it features a backlight that automatically adjusts to your environment for the best reading experience and convenient wireless charging. Just like the Kindle Paperwhite, the Signature is also waterproof, making it ideal for those who like to read in the bath or by the pool or ocean. The $155 sale won’t last, though, so scoop one up in black, jade, or raspberry.
Amazon Kindle Kids
Spark a love of reading in kids with the Amazon Kindle Kids for under $100. This e-reader features all of the things adults love about Kindle: a 6-inch screen, a backlight to make it easy to read in any light, and quick charging that lasts for up to six weeks. But this device offers major perks, too: no ads, apps, videos, or games; a Parent Dashboard; and Amazon Kids+. The dashboard allows parents to load books onto their child’s device to have peace of mind about what they’re reading, and the subscription (free for six months then $5.99/month afterward) opens up access to thousands of age-specific books for kids to choose from at no additional cost. The gadget even has a two-year warranty where Amazon will replace it at no charge if it breaks.
I’m the granddaughter and niece of teachers, and I’m so fortunate to have grown up with family members who fostered my love of reading. My Amazon Kindle has taken the joy of my favorite hobby to another level, and I can’t recommend scooping up the right device for you while the gadgets are on sale ahead of Black Friday. There’s truly no greater gift for yourself or for a reader than a Kindle, especially while they’re priced from $85.
